WHAT IF
What if man had created the world?
Would all the pine trees be
isosceles triangles, would autumn leaves
turn only red or yellow,
would he have thought to make
a back swan or a brown-speckled
gull or kept a crippled boy?
Would he have thought to make
irregular things, would it all be molded
at the factory? Would he have thought
to have seeds carried by birds or pollen
carried on wings of bees or thought
the tiger should rip open the youngest,
weakest yak for lunch and would we
write poems about hummingbirds carried
thousands of miles on the winds or snowflakes
playing six ways, each one a singularity?
How many faces could he have made for people
to wear, how many ways would they love
and hate and how many ways could
their different eyes see the world?
Would man need to make things just so
and not let seeds fall and become what they may?
